Subscription Audit Checklist: Find and Cut Subscriptions You Do Not Need

A subscription audit takes around 30 minutes and can reveal hundreds of pounds in annual savings. Here is the full process.

Step 1: Find all your subscriptions

Check bank statements for the past three months (current account, credit cards). Write down every recurring payment. Check email inbox for receipts from subscription services. Use the search terms "subscription", "billing", "monthly", "annual renewal".

Step 2: Categorise and rate each one

For each subscription, ask: Do I use this? How often? What would I actually lose by cancelling? Rate each one on a scale of 1-5 for value. Anything rated 3 or below is a candidate for cancellation.

Step 3: Cancel or downgrade the low-value ones

Cancellation instructions are always on the provider's website — usually in Account > Settings > Subscription or similar. Most offer a pause option if you are unsure. Annual subscriptions can often be switched to monthly before cancelling.

Step 4: Consolidate what remains

Where you use multiple services in the same category (e.g. two streaming services), consider whether you could alternate — one month on, one month off — rather than keeping both running.

Step 5: Prevent future subscription creep

Use a virtual card or separate account for free trials. Set calendar reminders when trials end. Review subscriptions quarterly as part of your regular budget review.
