Single parents in the UK may be entitled to a range of financial support beyond Child Benefit. Understanding what is available and checking eligibility thoroughly is particularly important for single parents, as many families are unaware of all the support they can access.

Important: This is general educational information only. Benefit rules are complex and change regularly. Use the official calculators at Turn2Us (turn2us.org.uk) or GOV.UK for accurate information about your specific entitlement. For personalised advice, Citizens Advice provides free help.

Child Benefit

Child Benefit is available to all parents and guardians of children under 16 (or under 20 in approved education or training). It is not means-tested and is paid regardless of income. Single parents who are the claiming parent receive the full amount. The High Income Child Benefit Charge applies if either parent's adjusted net income exceeds the Government threshold — check GOV.UK for the current threshold.

Universal Credit

Universal Credit is available to single parents on low incomes, whether in work or out of work. The standard allowance plus child element is available, along with childcare cost support (up to 85% of eligible childcare costs) and a housing cost element if you rent. The childcare support within Universal Credit is particularly valuable for single parents returning to or increasing work hours.

Council Tax Reduction

Single parents are entitled to apply for Council Tax Reduction from their local council. As a single adult household (even with children, who do not count as adults for council tax purposes), you are also entitled to the 25% single person discount on your council tax bill automatically — make sure this is applied.

Free childcare hours

UK Government free childcare entitlements are available to eligible families. Check GOV.UK for current hours and age eligibility, as these have been expanding. Tax-Free Childcare is also available to single parents in work, providing up to 20% back on childcare costs (Government adds 20p for every 80p you pay, up to a cap).

Other support to check

  • Healthy Start vouchers: for pregnant women and families with children under 4 on qualifying benefits — for healthy food and vitamins
  • Free School Meals: eligibility linked to Universal Credit income levels and other qualifying benefits
  • School uniforms grants: administered by local councils and schools, availability varies
  • Widowed Parent's Allowance or Bereavement Support Payment: if you have been bereaved
