UK Cost of Living Comparison

Compare household costs across UK regions using ONS Family Spending data. Useful for anyone considering relocating or wanting regional context for their budget.

Figures are ONS regional averages — general context only, not precise predictions. Individual costs vary significantly. General guidance only.

How to use this cost of living comparison

Select two UK regions to compare average household costs side by side. The figures are drawn from ONS Family Spending survey data, which tracks actual household expenditure across the UK by region. They represent averages across all income levels and household types — use them as context rather than precise predictions, since your actual costs will depend on your specific circumstances, household size and spending patterns.

The comparison is particularly useful if you are considering relocating for work, retirement or lifestyle reasons. Understanding that London households spend on average £240 per week more than North East households — largely driven by housing costs — can help frame the financial tradeoffs involved in a move.

Housing is the biggest regional driver

The most significant difference between regions is almost always housing. Average 2-bed rents in London are more than double the North East average, and the South East, South West and East of England have all seen rent increases that have pushed them significantly above the national average. For households weighing up a relocation, the housing cost difference often dwarfs the salary difference, particularly for people moving from lower-cost areas to London or the South East.

This also means that households in cheaper regions who manage their budget well can accumulate savings and emergency funds faster than equivalent earners in high-cost areas, even if their gross salaries are lower. Financial resilience is often more about the gap between income and costs than about the absolute level of either.

Regional averages and individual budgets

Regional averages are useful context but they are not targets or rules. A family of five will spend significantly more than a single person in the same region. A household that owns its home outright faces very different fixed costs from one renting privately. Use the comparison to understand broad patterns and identify whether any category of your spending looks unusually high relative to your region — and then look at your own actual figures to understand why.
